Community Garden Benefits

Growing Food For Ocean Shores Community

When it comes to year around fresh produce, we grow it! Many of our urban and rural neighborhoods live in “food deserts” – places where it is nearly impossible to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. At GBTS, we offer individuals and families healthier lifestyles; fresh produce and opportunities for exercise and fellowship, a cleaner environment, a stronger community, and many educational opportunities throughout the year presented by our garden board members and certified WSU Master Gardeners right here in the North Beach.

Things to Know about Community Gardens:

  1. They are good for our communities. Community gardens make unproductive land useful.
  2. They produce fresh, healthy food. All the produce that is grown has a direct impact on improving local food security.
  3. Separate Plots. Although each community garden is organized a bit differently, GBTS has 4×8’ and 4×10’ foot raised beds along with 4×4’ foot accessible beds established as rental gardens.
  4. They build up the community around them. GBTS provides space for the Ocean Shores Food Bank to work with volunteers to grow produce for their families in need.
  5. Community gardens are wonderful places to visit. They are beautiful, peaceful, and inspiring.
  1. It takes many people to run them. The sustainability of community gardens relies on people getting involved and lots of community support.
  2. You can get involved. If you are inspired by our community garden, love locally grown food, and want to get involved, just give us a call!

The attentive work of gardening is a meditation of choice for many people. For some of our gardeners, their moments working in their raised beds offer a much-needed respite from both world and personal issues. Gardening pushes the news and chaos around us away. It allows us to center ourselves, become more mindful of their surroundings and blessings all while weeding, planting, watering, and harvesting.

Gardening is never a boring task!
