Best Watering Practices for Your Garden
|
|
Believe it or not, one of the biggest problems in Western Washington summer gardens is that they don’t get enough water. Some people may think that since we live in a rainy and cool climate our gardens really don’t need that much water. Where that may be true in the winter and spring, our summers-and even into early fall-can be quite dry. And just sprinkling on the surface now and then really doesn’t help our struggling plants.

THE RESTLESS GARDENER: August Tasks
August can be a busy gardening month! Here are a few tasks to consider from OSU Extension. - August through mid-September is the best time to establish a new lawn.
- Clean up strawberry beds and fertilize.
- Compost lawn clippings, leaves, and other plant material that is done for the season.
- Fertilize cucumbers, summer squash, and broccoli to help the plants keep up with production.
- Use mulch and/or temporary shade for sensitive plants that may be affected by the heat.
- Deeply water camellias to help them develop buds for spring.
- Monitor irrigation to make sure plants are getting what they need.
- Prune raspberries and other cane berries after their last harvest.
- Plant winter cover crops if desired in vacant spaces of garden beds.
- Plant late season crops such as kale, turnips, Brussel sprouts, spinach & cabbage.
- Monitor for pests and choose the least toxic options for control (see OSU link below for details on specific pests).

We Love our Volunteers!
| |
We want to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers that help to keep the garden growing. Some volunteers come to work parties to weed, paint, and make repairs, while others work quietly on their own by “adopting” common areas to keep weeded, watered and trimmed. We simply would not have a community garden without the individuals that step up to help keep it running every day. Thank you again everyone! For more information and/or to volunteer, please visit our volunteer page at: https://gardenbytheseaoceanshores.org/volunteer-opportunities/
