Garden by the Sea Newsletter #8

Dear Members & Friends,

The adage “A mother’s (and father's too) work is never done” certainly applies to gardeners as well. Some of our gardening chores can be considered drudgery, yet I hazard to guess that deep down anyone considering themselves a “gardener” genuinely enjoys their tasks.

Hopefully, our newsletters help satisfy your needs to find an excuse to get out in the yard (no … really, you don’t need to thank us!). This issue includes a helpful autumn “to-do list” for taking care of lawns, as well as other general indoor and outdoor gardening tasks. We also highlighted a hardy, yet charming, landscape plant (see Heaths and Heathers” article below) that does well here on the coast.

As we start to wind down our 🌻🌻 “Year of the Sunflower” 🌻🌻, we want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued interest in Garden by the Sea. We serve the North Beach community by providing not only community garden plots, but also educational opportunities to enhance everyone's gardening experience.

🌻Best wishes for a healthy garden full of sunshine, happiness, and hope for the future. 🌻

Karen Young, President: Garden by the Sea

PS .. If you have any 🌻🌻 sunflowers 🌻🌻 in bloom and would like us to include them in our website photo gallery, please email pictures to info@gardenbytheseaoceanshores.org. Also feel free to provide any topics you’d like us to address by clicking the link below. Thank you!

Lawns Need Some Fall TLC Too

lawn1 ‌

With the busy summer flying by, the last thing on our minds is the lawn. After all, it hasn’t even needed a lot of mowing lately. However, with autumn just around the corner now is a perfect time to start planning for those fall chores that are critical for making sure the grass is healthy, green, and strong next spring. What To Do With Your Old Seeds

‌ seed picture

If you have old seed packets laying around in a box or bag, it may be a good time to dispose of ones that are outdated. Some seed varieties can last for 3 or more years under the right conditions, while others are only viable for a year or so.

Click READ MORE below for guidelines on which seeds to save, how to test them prior to planting, and best practices for storing your seeds.

THE RESTLESS GARDENER:
Late Summer / Early Fall Tasks

This time of year can be perfect for getting caught up on our yard work. The weather is still comfortable and many of our summer activities are winding down. Here are a few suggestions for your gardens.

  • Fertilize lawn in the fall for strong spring growth
  • Divide herbaceous perennials such as Day Lilies, Lamb’s Ear, Hosta and Shasta Daisies
  • Plant new trees and shrubs (or transplant existing plants), and keep watered
  • Plant autumn bulbs for extra spring color
  • Plant garlic (in late fall) for harvesting next July
  • Harvest summer vegetable crops
  • Savvy vegetable gardeners can still plant a few fast-growing crops: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/gardening/a20707312/how-to-plant-fall-garden/
