Dear Members & Friends,
How did your garden grow? Was it AMAZING? .. or SO-SO?
Some years, I judge my gardening skills as “brilliant and amazing,” although this years' was more so-so. I have not quite yet mastered the art of overcoming all the gardening obstacles Ocean Shores throws at me! I was humbled by several mediocre harvests from my heat-loving crops, although my 🧅 onions and 🥕 carrots were quite happy with their growing conditions this year!
With most of the growing season behind us, it is time to think about fall chores to get our yards/gardens in tip-top shape to ride out the colder weather. Here are a few suggestions.
- Fertilize lawn in the fall for strong spring growth
- Divide herbaceous perennials such as Day Lilies, Lamb’s Ear, and Hosta
- Plant new trees and shrubs (or transplant existing plants)
- Plant autumn bulbs for extra spring color
- Prune roses
- Add mulch around the bottom of sensitive plants for protection from the cold
- Check out this link for vegetables that you can plant now: Vegetables-to-Plant-in-October
