Garden by the Sea Newsletter #12

Time to Seed Your Gardening Plans for 🌞 Spring 🌞!

Dear Members & Friends,

On April 6th our 🌿 Annual Garden by the Sea Opening Celebration 🌿 officially kicks off the 2024 gardening season! Time to come rent a plot, or just shop for plants and garden supplies. More details are in the newsletter below.

While you wait for spring, you can “seed” your 🥕 gardening plans! What do you want to plant this year 🥦, and where will everything go to maximize harvests? A garden journal is helpful for planning from year to year, and you can start looking at seed catalogs for ideas and perhaps even order some interesting new seeds 🌱.

If needed, our opening celebration can help with your plans! Master Gardeners 👩‍🌾 will be available to answer all your gardening questions throughout the day.

For planting crops in Ocean Shores and other coastal areas, check out this list of vegetables that do well here. It will help with the timing of both seeds and seedlings for anyone wanting to start early.

I look forward to seeing you 👨‍🌾 in the garden this spring!

FEATURED COASTAL PLANT:
Barberry and Bayberry

‌ Barberry vs Bayberry, barberry

Barberry and Bayberry are both great shrubs to plant in coastal landscapes. Both prefer cool, wet coastal climates, are strongly deer resistant, and they both survive well in nutrient poor sandy soils.

Volunteers Wanted!

Some Volunteers ‌

Do you like being outdoors?

Do you enjoy helping others in the community?

If you said “yes” to both questions, then helping at the community garden is for you!

Volunteering at Garden by the Sea allows people to combine their love of the outdoors with a much-appreciated contribution to the Ocean Shores community. We work with individuals’ personal schedules, interests, and abilities to accommodate their needs. Here are a few of the most common ways you can help.

  • Come to the garden one day per week to water during the summer.
  • “Adopt” a flower bed or other common area of the garden to regularly weed and water during the growing season.
  • Attend work parties that are not only productive, but social and fun!

Thank you for considering volunteering at Garden by the Sea. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our great community of volunteers and gardeners!

If you want to sign up to volunteer, please call us at 425-255-4025 or via email at info@GardenByTheSeaOceanShores.org .
